Frisian Culture and Heritage Tulip Tour

This tour will take you to Friesland, which is widely considered to be the most beautiful of all Dutch provinces. The Frisians have their own flag and speak a different language. Their unique culture and heritage—not to mention their famously stubborn pride—truly makes them stand out from the rest of the country.

This tour offers an insider’s look at life in this beautiful province, where most of the land is below sea level. Escape the busy city center to learn more about Dutch and Frisian culture and heritage, and experience the beautiful environment for yourself.

Our local guides will gladly share you everything there is to know, while you enjoy the beauty and tranquility of the Dutch countryside.

Full itinerary

Within 15 minutes, we will have left the busy city center of Amsterdam behind.

We’ll pass meadows, cows, ditches, windmills, dikes, idyllic landscapes, and many colorful tulip fields as we make our way to the world famous Afsluitdijk. This dam connects the two northern provinces, and protects half of the country against the force of the North Sea. It’s also the gateway to the Amsterdam Lake District.

Time to explore this dam! Find out why it’s so important for the Lake District, walk across to see the North sea, climb the monument (a watch tower looking out across both the IJsselmeer and the North Sea), or take a picture with its founder, Mr. Lelie.

Then we enter the Amsterdam Lake District, located in the province of Friesland. We stop at an old wood sawmill in Sloten, the smallest city in Friesland. Look out over the lake and the meadows while the miller tells you everything about his work, the mill, and the significance of windmills to the Netherlands.

Next up is picturesque open air museum “Allingawier”. Make sure your camera’s ready to capture the sights! Meet the villagers, and travel back in time with a craftsman as your local guide. Explore the interior of an old Dutch farmhouse, walk across the grasslands, and find out what happened to the lake… A typical Dutch Farmers Lunch will await you at the restaurant (included in the tour).

After lunch, it’s time to visit a traditional Dutch cheese-maker. Here, you will learn all there is to know about cows, making cheese, and the different types of cheese. And of course you will try some delicious Dutch varieties: “Lekker!”

Now it’s time for a unique moment: taking a walk through the tulip fields. The tulips only bloom for a couple of weeks each spring, so strike a pose, say cheese, and take plenty of pictures.

Once the afternoon draws to a close, it’s time to head back to Amsterdam to enjoy your evening in the city.
