Secrets of water: the battle in the Netherlands

Within 15 minutes we have left the busy city center of Amsterdam behind us so it’s time to keep your eyes and ears open. As you will see the beautyfull Dutch countryside and learn everything about Dutch watermanagement.

We start by exploring a beautiful area of reclamed land. Indeed, we will be driving over the former bottom of the lake. Learn when, why and how this area was reclamed, and why there are still so many little canals in between the meadows. During spring and summer the area is at it’s prettiest.

Up next is the Enclosing Dike. Our biggest and most important dike. Learn why it was built, and explore the dike on your own. Here you will also find out how we still battle the water today. Because when you live below sea level, the fight against water is never ending!

After exploring the dike and learning more about regulating water levels, pumping water in and out and the operation of locks, it is time to enjoy the water. Hop on the boat, sit back and relax while you enjoy the countryside from the water as the captain will tell you everything about the beautiful surroundings.

After this boat trip we’re sure you’re getting a little hungry so it’s time for lunch (which is included in your tour). During this traditional Dutch Farmers Lunch there is more time for questions and learning about life in the Netherlands. From nowadays to back in the day. Our guides love to share the details with you.

Now it’s time to visit a picturesuqe watersports village, the only tourists you’ll find here are either Dutch or German. Enjoy a walking tour by a local guide who will share all the secrets of this little village. The tour will include a visit to a traditional windmill, an exclusive look inside an antiquity room and a tour through a maze of alleys. All exclusively for you!

Our last stop is another amazing architectural piece. The Ir. D.F. Wouda Steampumpingstation. Learn how we use water to fight the water. One of the operators will give you an exclusive tour through the pumping station and while he will tell you everything there is to know about this unique master piece you can ask him anything and take some great pictures.

Now the time has come to explore more polder landscapes while we drive back to Amsterdam. By the end of the afternoon you will be back in the city and have time to enjoy the evening on your own.
