Full Itinerary

UNESCO World Heritage VIP Winter tour

Within 15 minutes we have left the busy city center of Amsterdam behind us and this special edition of our most populair tour will start. Winter in the Netherlands, a nice and cozy time, which the Dutch call “gezellig”. Join our VIP Unesco winter tour and find out what gezellig means.

We start the day with two UNESCO sites: the world-famous Beemster polder, and the Defense Line of Amsterdam. Discover how the Dutch were masters over the water as early as the 16th century by reclaiming land and using water in the battle against enemy attacks. Next, it is time to visit the world-famous Afsluitdijk (Enclosing Dike). Wander around on this amazing dike while you enjoy a wonderful view of the IJssel lake, the biggest fresh water lake of the Netherlands. Cross the dike to the next UNESCO World Heritage Site on the list: the Wadden Sea. To find out more about the building of this dike we will visit the lunchroom, which is more like a small museum. Enjoy a cup of Dutch hot chocolate milk and admire the pictures, news paper articles and black and white movie about the building and opening of the dike.

Then we’re off to picturesque Woudsend, a beautiful small village in Friesland. A local will guide you through the small alleys while telling you everything about the secrets this small village is hiding. Meanwhile he will take you to an old antiquity room dating back to the early 1700’s, give you a sneek peek inside a hidden church and you will visit a windmill where a local miller will give you a tour.

Now it’s time for lunch, another highlight. We will enjoy a delicious Dutch farmers lunch inside a very special restaurant: the first church in the Netherlands which has been transformed to a restaurant!

Our next stop is another UNESCO treasure: the impressive Ir. D.F. Wouda Steam Pumping Station. Here you will enjoy a grand tour by one of the operators. Follow closely as he will give you an exclusive entry.

The last stop of this full day of exploring our great little country is another true UNESCO World Heritage Site. Have you ever been on an island which has been “swallowed” by land?  Now you have, while our local guides takes you to the former seabed where you will find the “island” of Schokland. It’s impressive to learn while the inhabitants were send away by their own government.

After this final stop it’s time to explore more reclaimed land and we continue our journey on or way back to Amsterdam. By the end of the afternoon you will be back in Amsterdam to enjoy your evening in the city.
